This six hour
class begins with one hour of class room or on-shore instruction and
familiarization with paddling equipment.
Topics covered include:
choosing a paddle
spray skirts
types of kayaks
recommend safety and rescue gear
Basic navigation, use of charts, compass and GPS are also covered. Recommend
camping gear, foodstuffs, proper waterproofing and loading of gear for camping
and touring from a kayak are covered.
On water instruction will teach proper paddle grip, introduction of various
paddling strokes with emphasis on the most efficient forward strokes. Also
covered will be the purpose and use of both rudders and skegs.
Demonstration of rescue techniques include self-rescue and assisted
rescues. Other topics will cover safety around other watercraft and their
avoidance with a short introduction on reading weather and water
conditions while on the water.
